4.88's and 31's?????

Can't afford to do it all at once. Would it be better to get 33's first and deal with the pansie power or go to 4.88's and run my 31's a while longer? What type of mileage can I expect? I already have the lift. It is onroad (highway=trips as far as 1000 miles) as much as off road. It is already a puke off road on steep hills. It will be may be a year before I go the next step.

4.88's with 31's will suck!!! you will spin the tires in first all the time you will not be able to go over 70 on the free way without your engine wanting to blow up, and gas will go down like a mo fo. go with the 33's on stock and see how you like it. if you have 4.10s stock you will get better gas with the 33's! red

'89-'95 4Runners with the V6 and an automatic transmission came stock with 4:88 gears. My '95 has 4:56 and a manual trans. If you have the cash now, I would go with the gear swap and some kind of traction aid in the rear. If you keep your highway speed under about 65 mph you will be fine. If you are running a lift then over 70 isn't really such a great idea anyway. Plus, you can pick up set of 33s easily anytime. 400 bucks? Go with the gears. Toyotas rev out just fine and you will love the extra power.

what do you have in your tacoma right now!? 4.10's? If so then think about how much more gearing you need right now with the stock tires?! None it is allready low enough with room to spare. The 4.88s will suck an it will cost over a thousands in parts and install. Go with the lift and tires first and see if you really even need to regear for his taste. And why not go over 65 with a lift and tires? I have gone 90 with 4-6 inchs of lift and 33-35's just fine. it depends on the lift,tire width,wheel width,etc.

I do have 4.10's but it is just not enough for off road, even for 31's! It's a puke on any hill when your trying to crawl. If I am forced to stop, I have to spin the tires to get going again so I don't burn my clutch. If 4.88's are too low for 31's then I will wait. But they will come. There is now way I can drive only 65...thats rediculous! Espeacially if I am heading to Canada or something.

yeah offroading the 4.10s are not the best but that is why they have lower gears for the transfer case or even double it up. I need the good street gearing because mine is a daily driver. I am going with 4.56's with my 33's. If i need lower gears for offroad then i will do it in my case. red

I have hit over 90 in my 4Runner with a lift and "35s and I can tell you that it is not the most responsible thing to do. You have ZERO room for error at anything above 75. A panic stop or a quick lane change is out of the question. I have over 60 grand in my truck so I guess that alone may keep my speed down at reasonable levels. Once you drop $1000 on tires alone, knowing that speeds over 60mph chew the crap out of your meats w is enough to slow you down. My '03 Double Cab hits 90 on a regular basis and that is why it will remain bone stock until I trade it in on a new '04!

Have you run 33's with 4.56's before? How about off road? I need a good ratio because like I said, I put on a lot of highway miles as well. I have talked to lots of guys who love 4.88's with their 33's but I don't think they are completely honest about the highway use. I need off road power along with my highway commutes. Most of the places I hunt have steep grades and plenty of rock. I may not drive 90 but at least 70 and up to 80 on trips (not back roads). I am looking at 5" total lift with my 33's.

I never asked if you are running an auto trans or 5 sp. or even if you have the 2.7 or the 3.4.
This will help to figure out the best balance of gearing and tire size. For highway use, your target (especially for the V6) should be to keep cruising speeds below 3K RPM at 70 or so. 33's and 4:88's will work fine in any case. Remember also that 33" tires are not usually 33 inches tall. They can vary from 31.5 inch to well over 33 inches. Most any expert on Toyotas will tell you that 4:88s are the best ratio for a true 33 inch tire.

I am running a 2.7 manual shift. I am getting Pro Comp's mud terrains. With the 2.7 my cruising speed is usually around 3k anyway just to stay up to speed. I rarely use 5th unless I am going down hill.

with a 4 cyl. you will not mind a few extra rpm on the highway. the 4:88's will be well worth the extra money. Your cruising rpm should still be very close to stock. (4:11s and 31's)
