Car servicing

Hi,

I usually get my car serviced at the dealer. I own my 2013 Prius C for a little more than 5.5 years, and always take to dealer for servicing. It has now 34K miles on it.

I have been taking the car to the dealer every 6 months. But he has been changing oil & doing tire rotation every year since it had low mileage.

From last visit he had been recommending me to do a bunch of things:
- brake pads replacement
- brake fluid change
- throttle fluid change
- mass air flow sensor cleaning
- etc

Is it necessary to do all these things at such a low mileage? How do I decide what needs be really done & what can I skip?

If I look at the maintenance guide, it just asks to do oil changes, change oil filters, do tire rotations, and "inspect" various fluids & other things.

Re: Car servicing

You don't have to do anything outside of your owner's manual unless wear or unusually harsh conditions warrant. Bring your car to a trustworthy mechanic and have them inspect everything the dealer recommends. It is hard to believe that you need brake pads and brake system flush after only 34 k miles. You don't need to do anything to your mass air flow sensor unless you have a related check engine light showing with a stored code for the MAF sensor. Many parts stores will download the codes free for you and you can investigate what they mean as it suits you. Do not trust the dealer to save you money. They will recommend maintenance with a high level of caution - meaning they will charge you for anything they can think of, whether you need it or not.

I don't understand what "throttle fluid" is. Maybe they mean transmission fluid which is not in your list of maintenance items. Unless you live in the mountains, I don't believe that you would need that either.
