Xterra Transmission ???

My daughter has a 2000 Xterra, V-6 4x4. When you first shift from park (or reverse) to drive, there seems to be a longer than normal time before it starts moving. Fluid level good, not burnt however I do not know when it was last changed. I bought it 2 years ago. After it is moving it is fine, no slipping, no noises, NORMAL SHIFTING. could this just be a filter/fluid issue?

Re: Xterra Transmission ???

It could be the fluid and filter. Transmission fluid does break down over time and thins out, so if it's been that long since the fluid was changed, it may be time for some fresh fluid and a new filter.
Another possibility would be a slight blockage in the valve body. Not necessarily a full on clog, just a little gunk that may restrict the flow of fluid and cause the delayed shift.

Re: Xterra Transmission ???

Like I said, I have no idea when the last (if ever) transmission service was done. I bought the car from the original owner but that really doesn't mean anything these days, she seemed like a space cadet anyway. Fluid didn't look bad/smell bad but no idea about filter. After it picks up drive it is fine the rest of the day until it sits for a while and you start over.
