Yacht Racing Influence on Fuel-Efficient Cars

DENVER – (August 6, 2009) – What do auto racing and yacht racing have in common with the race toward more fuel efficient vehicles? More than you might think according to two of the biggest names in automotives and sailing!

MotorWeek’s John Davis and sailing and ESPN commentator Gary Jobson will share how yacht and auto racing are influencing the engineering and design of everyday cars on Volvo Ocean Race Sunday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. on KBDI-12.

The around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race sailing competition is more than just a world-class sporting event since it has real world applications, according to Davis and Jobson. They say that the need for speed on both land and water has led to breakthroughs in racing technology that in turn are being used to make mass-produced vehicles more fuel efficient.

“The designers of tomorrow’s cars are paying very close attention to what’s going on with these racing yachts in terms of aerodynamics and building materials,” said MotorWeek host and executive producer Davis. “Materials like carbon fiber produce the lightest and strongest yachts. For everyday cars, that translates into more miles per gallon.”

“These synergies between motor car racing and sailing are many,” said Volvo Ocean Race host Jobson. “Lightweight materials, aerodynamic design and highly skilled helmsmen/drivers are key components in achieving success. It was fascinating to discuss analogies between both sports with MotorWeek’s John Davis.”
