Tamiya Rothmans Porsche 956 after 16 year hiatus

Hi everybody.

First post on this forum, and first ever to do with modeling.

I decided to get back into the hobby after almost 16 years away and decided to pick up where I left off.
Started to do some more detailing to the engine, to which I had to scratch build the ITB's as I had managed to lose the original one's.
Thanks to the info available online, Im planning on lots more detail. Not too sure if thats a good thing, lol.

Thanks guys.
Really think i picked a good time to get back into it. Can't believe the choices/resources available now with the internet. Pretty awesome.
Any advice or links is appreciated. I want to make this look weathered like its near the end of a 24hr race. Lots of info on rusting but nothing so far on well used race car weathering.

The very best way to approach this is to start with pics of actual cars that have finished an endurance race. Ideally, cars like the one you're building, that have finished the race it ran. Some weathering (like making an engine look a bit dirty using washes and stained exhausts) can be treated generically. But other weathering cannot. A car that has just finished a 24h race will look different than just about anything else- because it's been subjected to conditions unlike anything else.

A weathered model of a car that has just run a race tells a story. The weathering (if done properly) also tells that story. Warm mid summer night? There were probably lots of bugs. Was there a major fire? Maybe the cars ran through heavy smoke for several laps. Did it rain? How and where did rivers of water streak on this car? "Just make it look dirty" is not really going to work very well.

So what did the car you're building look like?

Re: Tamiya Rothmans Porsche 956 after 16 year hiatus

Thanks! I'd been looking for the last little while but that site never came up. Weird how google works.
Bug splatters, in my own experiences, are very noticeable near the end of endurance races. Can't say I've seen it represented, more like general misting around the car/windshield, which looks good for general+having driven through rain weathering. Engine I'm thinking overall clear semi/ flat with a little medium gray and tan mixed in, dusting overcoats. tamiya smoke might work for oil weepage after the dust coats.
Going to work on the fuel rails/ITB's tonight.

MPWR - you a BMW fan?

Weathering: less is more, subtlety is the key. Beware how far you go to town on oil leaks etc, it's not common for this to happen on a race engine so check your references. General surface diet and grime is much more likely.
Looking forward to seeing more!

soot though from exhaust is something that is a bit more forgiving, in terms of going heavily at it
