bolt pattern of rims

What does this mean ''bolt pattern of rims''?

Someone asked me that question about my rims.

Referring to steel wheels.

It refers to the number of lugs or bolts and the diameter of the circle they form - referred to a the "bolt circle diameter".

There are many, many combinations and both alloy and steel wheels use the same pattern for a given vehicle.
