Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but do the code readers receive codes all the time? Or is it only when a check engine light or other warning light is on?

Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
A dirty air filter can hurt a lot, and low tire air pressure will hurt for maybe 1-2 mpg. As far as the code reader goes, it basically scans for any error codes set. I think the cheap scanners can only typically pick up a code when a SES light is on. An expensive one can tell you all kinds of things you may want to know, and can also tell you about some codes that the cheapo may not pick up.
Go to autozone or advance, they can scan it with the cheapo for free. It may or may not pick something up. If not, take it somewhere that has a good one (dealer) and see what they say. Essentially, the expensive ones don't just scan for codes, they also read lots of engine/tranny settings. These new engines can accomodate and adapt to problems to mask a problem. A trained tech (not me) can look at the readout and tell you way more than just a error code number. |

Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
I've been getting a steady 14mpg during the winter but now that it is nicer out I expect a slight increase. I also haven't filled up recently because of the rise in gas prices but we will see soon.
Also i vote this thread be a sticky since it seems like every week there is a new fuel economy thread

Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
I have been reading alot ( not all of this thread) and I am amazed to hear some of the mpg. I have a 2004 6.0 crew cab with 3:73 gears and it gets around 15mpg up hill, down hill, loaded, or unloaded. Of course can't change fuel filter because it's in the tank (really smart engineering)

Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
I got a 3-4 MPG increase by putting on a fiberglass truck topper. This is a highway only increase. Intown mpg increased maybe 1 mpg or so.

Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
single cab long bed, 4.8v8,
20mpg all high way. keep speed at 60 and it goes up to 22mpg. 5 speed tranny manual. ( in cruise control ). energy goes up cube of speed, first compressing the air,the at higher speeds it actually lifts the air (bad). its a weight and speed thing. Have friend works in Boing wind tunnel. Can tell you exactly what happens with a large frontal area. lower your ballistic coeffiecnt and get better economy. compare a box of crackers to a needle. see ?

Re: GAS Mileage - how to make it better.
Keep your speed at 60, and you'll get run over, at least around here.
I drive ~150 miles a day, and I keep my speed around 90.
