Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya

It has been quite a while since I last posted a project of my own, time to get back into it. Now just don't expect me to finish a model in 2 weeks. I'm not that fast.

I've build the Tamiya Boxster once before. That was a commission build. This will be for myself.
I will built it with the double bubble, a new set of rims and opening doors and luggage compartments. I will not be doing the engine. That will be too complex for me.

Here we go

All moveable parts cut out.

And some of the inspirational and reference photos

Until next update

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya

Thank you.
Since I'm working on my new home office/hobby space, I need to wait for the weekend in order to get to my building materials. I need some more styreen

But I want to try to print the hood inserts. So I fired up Blender, looked from some correctly angled reference images and started drawing out the shape. It will probably be around 2mm thick. Let's see if my Photon can manage that.

Progress seems slow, but I've really put in some decent hours to get this far

A few more hours and then let's try printing and fitting it. Probably going to need some adjustments.

I finished the 3d object, at least good enough for a test print on Saturday.

Since you're asking

Over the weekend I started printing. First finding the correct angle so I don't have any layer lines. And also making small adjustments to make it fit.
I ended up in printing vertically. It takes five and a half hour... but the result is at it's best.

Then another test fit

I made the final changes to the model so it falls nicely withing the hood boundries. I also included a small indent in the nose section where you can stick your fingers in to reach the release lever.
This is the final render (hopefully) and I can print it one final time.

Next part up is going to be the rear trunk reinforcement. The basic shape is there. Now I need to make an adjustment to reflect the indent for the oil reservoir space.

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya

With the painter having claimed my hobby room for a week, progress grinded to a halt.
I just managed to squeeze a small update in.

I've printed my designs (after many small alterations) and attached them to the insides of both hoods. I'm quite pleased with the result.
Now I've started initial work on the top part of the luggage compartments. That will give the the correct side of the compartments, but will also bring back some highly needed rigidity

Created the first rough shapes for the luggage compartments and made sure the bottom half and interior would still fit

I think nextup will be the door sills

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya

Gradually the model comes back to life. The constructive bits are now all in place in the front compartment, giving the model back its rigidness.

A few pictures of the steps along the way.

I wanted to be a bit further in sculpting the right curves. Unfortunately, since I was out of the hobby for quite a long time, my Milliput dried out and I seems to have misplaced my sculpting tools.
I ordered some new supplies, so hopefully I can get some more progress on that this week.

And finally I want the Boxster to shine a bit more, so I bought a new set of rims and metal transfers for the detailing at the end.

Until the next update...

Re: Porsche 986 Boxster S - Tamiya

Next phase, getting a full door. I first alligned the door and made sure it could swing open (no hinges yet). And then filled it with Milliput so I can start shaping the sills after it has hardened.

The rear trunk also has it's basic shape and with a bit of left over Milliput I filled the first bit of the seam of the body and the insert.
