Question 96 4x4 2" suspension lift

I am contemplating manufacturing my own suspension lift, and I am wondering if any of you guys have done this already and can offer some tips or things to watch out for before I start dissassembling and welding s#&t up.
The truck is; 1996 1500 4x4 Club Cab, short box, Sport
tires; BFG 285/75/16 Mud Terrains
wheels; factory 16"x10"

Some back ground; I am not doing this because I am too cheap to go buy a ready made lift kit, I just like making stuff. I have access to a fully outfitted welding and sheet metal fabricating shop, I have made my own bush guard with winch plate, trailer hitch that is barely visible, aluminum diamond plate tailgate, box rails, and dry box. I'd rather make it than buy it because I know in the end it will be better. However, I am no engineer. The stuff I fabricate fits like a glove because I usually spend a lot of time with the angle grinder, this is where some tips and short cuts from you guys would really help me out with this project. If you can help me out you would be saving me a lot of time and cut down on the use of the "scrap metal bin".
