Car title and registration

I purchased a car from a guy who had purchased the car himself two month prior to selling it to me. However, he never registered the car so when I went to my local tag office to register the car in my name, I was unable to do so because the title was transferred to him first. The people at the tag office said he has to put the car in his name before he can transfer it over to me. The guy is not cooperating or responding anymore, leaving me with a car I can't do anything with. I have no idea what I can do

You state he never registered it but the title is in his name? Did you get the title?

I do have the title. It's in the original owners name whom he (the guy I bought the car from) purchased the car from. His name is written in ink on the back page of the title and mine written under his. I was told at the tag agency that there can only be a name on the back of the title. This is a picture of the title

Re: Car title and registration

I'm no lawyer. And most used cars are sold "as is". But the seller is required to provide a clear title. Depending how much you paid. I would see what the limit is in your state for small claims court. If under the limit, file against him and have him served. Either he gives you clear title or you get your money back. All lawyers do provide a free 15 minute consult.

Re: Car title and registration

If you do file, make sure you include the court filing fees in addition to what you want back.
