Question 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 cyl. ..how to remove counter balance shaft

I have already removed timing belt and that timing belt B (which goes over that balance or counter balance shaft ...not the oil sprocket ) ...now obviously the counter balance shaft is rotating with the screw...I actually found that previous owner/mechanic did a mistake and that mark was not aligned with notch on the block..so I want to see the condition of shaft and bearing and if that makes noise ...

Is there any other option than using that special tool MD998785 to hold the shaft while I remove the nut

i would say make your own out of some steel with a drill and a grinder or see if any of your local auto parts stores have one they will rent you. otherwise might have to pay the $26 on e-bay to get one. or you might be able to put old belt back on and slide damper back on and use a strap wrench while you loosen nut

Thanks... When I put the old belt just to unbolt this shaft sptocket do I have to align all marks or it does not matter? Will it damage anything is timing marks are not aligned?

Also If I put the belt back on... It will still rotate together... Won't it?

if you leave the main belt off you will have to be careful you don't turn the crank or you could cause valve damage when trying to remove the balance shaft nut. is the gear damaged or is the seal behind it leaking? not sure if you need to get gear off to pull balance shaft out. is there enough room to pull the shaft out once its loose or is it going to hit the inner fender? should also be able to just spin it by hand and see how it feels. if you have a impact and enough room you can just rattle on the nut a few times till it comes loose if you need to. hope you lines the cam and crank marks up before you pulled main belt
