307
getting a 1969 chevelle malibu 307 I know it is not a fast chevelle and not trying to. Just want to give it bit more bite. What about headers and a performance crb? Thanks...

Re: 307
Welcom to Af, yes that is an underpowered sbc, small port engine. Some performance can be gained by your plan, but of it will come at higher rpms.

Re: 307
very poor on computer. so headers and a better carb won't do much of anything?

Re: 307
Headers and a different carb would probably make very little difference. As Max stated, the biggest problem is likely the heads, and possibly the cam. Fortunately, a lot of SBC heads will fit and can make a difference. More detail would be needed to verify what you have first.
The typical '69 307 had a 2 barrel Rochester, probably a 2GC, and large chamber heads with smallish valves and coincidentally small port runners. Upgraded stock heads or aftermarket heads such as '416 castings from a later 305, or World S/R or Edelbrock E-Tec heads can provide better flow, and if you get smaller chambers like 58cc the static CR can be bumped to close to 9½:1 without touching the pistons. After that, a better cam will help the flow. That's the point where header sill actually make a difference, and a different carb would be in order IF the original is a 2GC. If the original carb is a QuadraJet, I'd stick with that and set it up for the new heads/cam.

Re: 307
Wow - thank you very much. I am no mechanic. I have done brakes an adjusted timing. That's about as far as I can say. When the car arrives, how will I know the displacement/bore ?

Re: 307
A friend of mine had a 307 Chevelle years ago. His 307 had the 2 barrel. Some came with the QuadraJet. The cam in any of them was pretty tame, and the heads were all restrictive.
Get some photos when it arrives so we can all take a look.

Re: 307
thanks folks. The car will be delivered soon and I will be better informed at that time. The chevelle I had at 18 (the same time it found a telephone pole - always one block from the house) had the four barrel. Maybe this one will also. This forum is great. It's like group therapy for car people. Any more input is welcome.
