In-car PC...?

Has anyone put an actual PC computer in their car? It wouldn't be that hard really. LCD screen up front in your visor or on your dash with touch pad and small keyboard in console and then PC in glovebox or trunk. Everything in your computer runs on DC so that wouldn't be hard to make a power supply... But then you could run your MP3's, GPS equipment and play your games all in one unit. The cost wouldn't be that much either.

Can someone find a way to shoot this idea down?

plus it would be real annoying to shut down windows after each drive,...
also computers run on 12 volts I think.

i've seen it in a talon before...

get a damn laptop....:smoker: space saving...weight-saving...you can yell.."shut it off!!" when it says danger to manifold:finger:

but really...get a laptop. u won't need THAT big of an inverter and won't drain your battery as fast. just plug it in when you need to recharge it:finger:

Why would you need a power inverter? A computer runs on 12 and 5 volt DC since you already have the 12v just get the 12 down to 5 and hook that up. Theres some more power connections on the MB; I wonder what those run off of It would probably just be easeir to get the inverter.

Hopefully I spelled everything correctly. I wouldn't want the grammar police to yell at me

You would need a power inverter... Yea a computer runs with 3-12 volts, but initially you need a 115 VAC @60 HZ to get the computer to come on.. So you need an inverter to take your battery's 12VDC and convert it to 115 VAC @ 60 HZ Then once the 115 is applied then its transformed to a low DC voltage... It could be hard wired, but it wouldnt be worth the risk.. Stick with the laptop...

yeah you could just power invert the connection to the computer power supply... and have the nice use of all those harness for each drive and have the built in circuit breaker thingie

desktop could cause problems, heat and car rides are really jumpy and rough laptops are built for that but it would destroy a desktops hard drive in a few months, and about the inverter that would be needed. there is no way short of a technical genus you could rewire a computer power supply to run from a car battery. inverter is just much easier
