250cc Cart racing??? is it a good place to start?

a freind of mine gave me a frame to a racing go cart. its got hydrallic disc brakes and good tires but no motor. i was looking into maybee getting into this sport. i can generally do most of the engine building my self and all of the fabrication. i was just curious if anyone knew what kind of inspection or test that i would have to pass. i live in phoenix so i would probably race some sort of south west circut. and if anyone had any pointers that they could pass along. i am planning on using a 2 stroke dirtbike engine, atleast for the timebeing. any info is welcome.

There should be kart tracks around your area, just look for them on the internet.

And to answer your question as to wether or not it's a good place to start racing, I'll tell you this, both Senna and Schumacher started with karts.

i think a 125 is what you want. a 125 will go 0-100 in 4 seconds. the 250s are rare i went to a kart race that was a really big tour with all the pros and they didnt have any 250 classes. From what ive heard from my friend who was number one for awhile that most people start on a 80

Start with a 100cc clutch kart. It'll have a lot more for you than you will have for it.

Unless the chassis was designed for a 125 gearbox set-up you won't be able to use it very well anyway. It won't be stiff enough, it won't be easy to install front brakes, and more.

Start with a 80cc Shifter Kart if you have no racing experience, if you do start with a 125cc shifter.
