Heating problem 1994 4x4 2.6 fi

Engine will heat up when going up hill to near top of heating gage. It will also do this "on occasion" when at idle when the RPM does its own thing and increases to 1500 rpm. If I am cruising on level road their is no heating problem. Any and all advice appreciated!

I have the exact same truck, and I am too having an idle probelm. Mine will take off and idle real high when it sits at idle speed for a while, like at a stop light in traffic or something. It tends to not do it as often when it is cool outside or rainy. Last night, I drove it home and let it idle in the driveway until it started acting up, then I raised the hood and just sprayed a fine mist of water from the garden hose accros the engine, got it wet. It calmed right back down to normal and did not do it again!!!

What in the world is causing this?????
