2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
I guess after I pulled out the ecm fuse for a few seconds the check engine light went off erasing the 7 previous codes I had. Now after 5 minutes of idle the check engine light is back on. I have 2 codes and it read 1 error code and 1 pending . The first code is : PO440 EVAP emission control system malfunctioning . Second code reads : same as the first one. Can anyone give any suggestion and I thought the check engine light does not come back on after 20 miles when reset. any help would greatly be appreciated...

Re: 2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
P0440 is pretty much always a loose gas cap or bad gasket on the cap. If you've already made sure its tight you might try replacing it. I got that code once and just replaced the cap since I wanted a locking one anyways. Havent had it since. Kasias CEL came on in Moab so I hooked up my reader and got the same code. Just loosened and retightened the cap and cleared the code. So far it hasnt come back on.
It could also be a leaky hose in the evap system but its rare and harder to find.

Ok . I'll give that a try gizmo. Retightened my lockable gas cap. If it does not work. I'll just purchase a new one... $20 buck can't hurt vs. dealer cost to trouble shoot it. Thanks for the suggestion , I'll keep u posted.

Gizmo. I think I might of found the problem with check engine light. It might be everytime the gas tank is low the check engine light comes on, but when full tanks everything is back to normal without the check eng. lite. I read somewhere that is common with the rodeos. So thanks Gizmo for leading me to the right path.

Rodeo's do have issues with there fuel sending units, but I don't know if they will cause a CEL?

Re: 2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
How low are you letting the tank get to?
Never let it go below 1/4 tank or you risk burning up the fuel pump. It could be that when it gets low the system might not be able to pressurize the system properly. I usually fill up at 1/2 tank and never gone below 1/4 at the most so I dont know if its a common thing. As far as the sending unit causing CELs I've seen a couple posts where it has but usually it doesnt.

Re: 2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
I think your right gizmo about the tank to cause the CEL light to go on when tank is near empty. I don't think that's it either. It's giving me 3 new codes : PO401 Generic EGR Flow Insufficient , PO342 Camshaft Position A - Bank 1 circiut low Input, PO401 EGR Flow Insufficient. and I did try another locking gas cap from my truck and still the same check engine light. I have not yet bought a new cap . I figured I would try the one from my truck first to see if it would change the status of the CEL. I also smell fuel when I get out of the rodeo.

Re: 2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
Has your egr system ever been cleaned? I think the new codes might be caused by the tube inside the intake being dirty/plugged as well as the egr valve. You might try cleaning it and see if that clears things up. Here is a link to the FAQ page of how to do it..

Re: 2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
A bad fuel sender can cause the CEL to light. Mine would give a fault when the tank was near empty back before I replaced it. The fault was something about a bad or low fuel sensor. If you're smelling gas then start looking for leaks or bad hoses under the Rodeo.

Re: 2 new codes found after 5 minutes of idle
tx has a 4 cyl
omg its a major b@#!$ to clean that EGR sys if its plugged bad the darned EGR manifold may have to be removed I once had one plugged so bad i had to remove the head to clean it out just hope its not that bad as for the P0342 common these things eat CAM sensors easy as pie to replace but yo will have to have the isuzu scan tool to perform tooth error correction. I ts just a relearn proceedure shouldnt cost much the sensor is about $300 |
