Transmission skips second gear
I've got a '95 Silverado (automatic) that will only shift from 1st to 3rd. In fact you have to let off the gas for it to do that. It won't hit 2nd up or down and it never gets to overdrive. The fluid level is good.

... If no 2 or 4, but it has reverse, look for something failed in the area of the 2-4 band. The servo that operates this band is visible from outside the transmission, on the passenger side of it toward the front. Upon removing the clip that holds the cover in place (you could use Channelocks to 'persuade' the removal of the cover), you will see the piston setup. There are two pistons - one rides over the other - make sure the seals on both are good (there are three seals total). If everything looks OK, then the band itself might be toast. Did your fluid look good with a red to bright red appearance, no strong odor? You could also have a sticking valve. These transmissions (4L60E) have aluminum valve bodies that are known to wear out and cause problems. If the reverse is also gone, suspect the reaction sun shell inside the transmission to be failed.

Re: Transmission skips second gear
Reverse works just fine. The fluid looked good as well. The previous owner of the truck installed a floor shifter but the kind they installed doesn't allow me to manually shift to 3,2,1. I pull straight back to OD but when I drive it only hits 1st, let off the gas till it hits third then go. I'll check the pistons on the side but I've been told it may be shift solanoids as well? Also, are there electrical connections or something that may cause this? I have a suspicion that when the tranny work was done it was done by "less than professionals".

Re: Transmission skips second gear
The retainer for the band may have sheared off,,,known to happen,,,there won't be burned oil to give the condition away,,,,,,just no 2nd --or --OD,,,,,cannot believe both pistons for band would fail,,nor both sol to fail at the same time.......
