Question Change Transmission Fluid or Not? 2006 Suzuki Swift

2006 Suzuki Swift (Chevrolet Aevio)
1.6 L 230,000 km
Automatic

The transmission fluid is dark. Another mechanic said, "Don't change the fluid now because the transmission fluids today have so much detergents in them, it will only make it worse." That doesn't sound right to me; wouldn't clean fluid most always be better than burned?

It was drained 3 years ago, and might have had the filter changed then. Is it better to pull the pan to drain the fluid, and change the filter, or is it better to 'flush the system'. I have heard that flushing sometimes causes problems because it stirs up the fillings or grindings or sludge that has settled in the pan etc..
The pan should come down to change the filter no matter how the fluid is changed correct?

Note: There is a small whine present but this transmission shifts nicely, without any clunking or noticeable slipping.
