Need help with 1999 Chevy Lumina

Hi All,

I have a 1999 Chevy Lumina that needs to be running for 15-20 minutes before I can drive it. This only happens during the winter time. In the summer time it only takes 5 minutes to be running before I can drive. Any suggetion as to why it does that ? Your suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks

What happens if it is driven before running for 15-20 minutes? Knowing the symptoms might help with the diagnosis.

Hello,
If I try to put it in drive or reverse before the 15-20 minutes it doesn't move. Any suggestions ? Thank you for the response.

If the trans is full, more than likely it is due for an overhaul.

My Trailblazer has been like that for years, but only in the winter.

Cold weather...no reverse until it's warmed up. Forward is fine, though. I've put a hundred thousand miles on it like that.

Far as I can tell, it's a sticky valve in the valve body.

With forward AND reverse problems...I'd be suspecting an air leak into the pump--or a faulty pump.

Time for some pressure testing.

The line pressure test might be revealing, and could be useful.

Of course, clean and correct fluid is essential. If the trans has never been serviced it could be helpful to drop the pan, change the filter, check the exposed differential oil tubes, and refill with fresh Dexron 6 fluid (the new synthetic GM standard). It would be interesting to see the results from a cold start and operation through all ranges, and the same readings after the transmission is hot.

If the problem is damaged friction surfaces dropping the pan will remove most of the sediments but will keep several pints of the old fluid in the converter and transmission, thus some of the suspended friction material will remain.

If the problem is due to stuck valves, hard seals, or sludge buildup the fresh partial fill of oil could help that. Only time will tell.
