Question My First Car

I'm looking for my first car and I have 4 choices. My first choice is a 1992 Buick Skylark with 122K and thats all I konw about it because I haven't looked at it yet, or test drove it. My second choice is a 1985 pontiac Parisienne Sedan its a V8 and I haven't test drove it yet and I'll know more about it tomorrow. Finally the third choice actually came from my mom, she wants me to get a Chevy Tahoe or a Dodge Magnum.

I don't kow anything about Buick Skylark's except for the fact that its front wheel drive and its a V6.

I know the Pontiac Parisienne is a V8 and its rear wheel drive, which I hear is better for beginner drivers.

And of course its hard to tell a mom no so if i had to choose i think i would have to choose the Tahoe.

I'm just looking for opinions. All of the cars are used, even the ones my mom wants me to get but those are from a dealership and the ones I want are just for sale in my neighborhood. Me and my friend just finished rebuilding the engine in his Chevy Blazer so I believe I'm pretty skilled with a wrench so it doesn't matter to me if the car is messed up because I can fix whatever is broken, and if I can't my friend Josh has a family car shop and I'm pretty sure I can get a good deal on anything that I can't fix, or I can always ask the forum.

Re: My First Car

between the parisienne and the skylark, go with the skylark, its newer, smaller engine, little more nimble around the turns.

the skylark will save you a lot of money. i live close to a guy with a parisienne and lately its sat there most of the time leaking from every crevis.

im not sure but i think the skylark may have a 3800II in it. i have it in my olds. its a good engine, parts are very easy to find as it is the most widely used gm motor. oh yeah, not to mention gas mileage.

Re: My First Car

being a '92, it has a 3300, not a 3800 (same block though, very reliable)

Re: My First Car

What, how did you go from these old cars to a Dodge Magnum? Im a little confused on that one. RWD isnt better to learn on, especially if you live in an area with alot of rain/sleet/snow.

Re: My First Car

yeah how did you go from a two POS's to a magnum? thats a big jump

another big thing is that you will most likely end up getting into some sort of accident, or at least a couple of fender benders. a buick skylark is much easier to replace than a magnum or anything else

Re: My First Car

I would never buy a skylark. My parents bought a new 91 skylark back in 91 (of course) and it was the biggest POS around. Surprised any are still on the road...

Re: Re: My First Car

Well the Skylark was supposed to be 1000 but he tried to put one past me. The first time i test drove it it was running nice and I went to test drive it one more time before I actually bought it and he was like, "O. The Skylarks' fuel pump went out so you can't test drive it again. But I will sell it to you for 900 and all you have to do is sign the As-Is form."

After I told him to just let me try he did and as I turned the key I could hear the fuel pump kick in but the engine wasn't even trying to turn over. So I was just like F*** It he's trying to sell me a lemon.

So I got back on craigslist.com and got another list of cars to check out because I don't want to buy a new car, I want a used one.

I think I'm going to go for this Buick Regal because I know the guy from school and I did a quick look on his car with my teachers Tech-2 scanner and the car doesn't have any real problems with it.

Just a quick update on my status

Re: My First Car

I would be much more prone to suggest a Regal than a Skylark. I personally don't like the styling of them, but they seem like much more solid cars.

Re: Re: My First Car

Yea. The regal is a little ugly but I need a car and I don't care to much about looks yet. Just as long as its a 4 door and its running good. I don't want no POS. My insurance is going to be high enough as it is, I'm 17 male so I got to find a car that my agency will think is safe. That means nothing fun, but at least I'll b safe.

Re: My First Car

regals can actually be fun if you're willing to spend a little time on the. Its a W-body, same as the Grand Prix.

Re: My First Car

Well I didn't get neither of those cars. I ended up getting a 96 Buick LeSabre.

AMEN. My mom owns a BERGUNDY 91 skylark... I hate it. Accelration is shit, and it feels like you're driving a very large ocean liner. But ours is a V4.. Not a 6. I guess with some work, it could look nice at best, but performance... eh...
