Disable VATS

Hello, Brand new to this forum. We bought a 87 Vette as a project and can not get the engine to run. After much testing of the EFI, we have determined that the injectors do not squirt after more than 1-2 seconds. Research tells me that this might be a VATS issue. I want to fool the VATS into thinking that we have a resistor key (we do, but it no longer turns in the tumblers, and we have a non-resistor key that does turn, but it does not have the resistor chip.) So where / how do we fool the syustem into thinking the 1.68K ohm (#7) resistor is there? I can get such a resistor and solder it in, but where? I am thinking that others have pioneered this VATS bypass, and I have no desire to reinvent the wheel. Can anybody lead me to a webpage or a previous thread where this stuff is discussed? Thanks, Tim

Re: Disable VATS

Congrats on the new toy.

Are you saying that the key w/the resistor won't work in the ignition and the replacement key will? Or has the tumbler been switched out and it uses the generic key?
I broke my original key. The dealer cut a new replacement chipped key for me using the pattern from my spare.
I have heard of people replacing the original prom w/a performance chip that eliminates the vats. My Vette has a Superchip, but I'm not sure if it retains or eliminated the vats.

Re: Disable VATS

Just by a #7 Vats bypass from ecklers.com for about $25. That would be by far the easiest way. You will need to pull the cover directly under your steering column and the bypass will come with the instruction as to what wires to unhook and hook the bypass up to. You could also do the same thing, without the bypass, by just soldering the wires to a resistor, but i'd def. buy the bypass, as i figure i'd be a lot more reliable. Also, if your problem is the vats, your car will do absolutely nothing when you turn the key. It will act like your battery is completely dead, it will not turn over, it will not click, it will do nothing, but you can tell it's not the battery b/c all the inside lights and radio etc. still work. If when you turn the key, it turns over but just won't start, or won't run, I'm 99.99% positive it's not the vats, b/c the vats will disable the starter.
