Cool shifter knob

I have a 96 neon and i want to put a different shifter knob in it, one that more suits my style. i just don't know how to get the old one out, aka, the original. and i dont want to break anything. any suggestions?

Re: shifter knob

If I remember correctly (it has been ten years) after you pull the shifter boot down there are two wings on the base of the knob that you squeeze together and hold as you pull the knob up.

Re: shifter knob

OK ,I bought a B&M short shifter kit form Howell engineering and also a new knob, the knob has a collar that slides on the shifter shaft, and then the knob just slides on until it is seated and there is a hex screw that you tighten to hold the knob in place, the collar is threaded on the inside and it slips up and threads on the base of the knob and that gives the boot something to hold on to. I am sure Pep Boys, Advance or Auto Zone or Modern Performance all sell aftermarket shifter knobs.
