Short on info, who checked the brakes for this problem, dud they check for vaccum to the p/b booster or the booster itself, usual suspect for a hard pedal, I assume it also does not stop?

I'd check your brake booster and make sure you have vacuum to it.

Re: 1990 olds 98 hard brake pedal

Does your car have Anti-Lock brakes? If so it has a Teves ABS system. Usually they will start to fade and give you some kind of warning that the pump is going bad. If it just went bad overnight my guess would be the ABS Pump relay which is located on the firewall on the drivers side next to the ABS unit. Use a Known good relay and swap it out. The Teves ABS systems and parts are expensive so it will get costly if you just start replacing parts so find someone experienced with the correct tools to work on it.
Good Luck
