2004 f350 6.0l

71,000 miles. No chip. 5sp manual. I wasn't have any problems until after I came back from a week long business trip where I had my truck at the airport parking. It started up just fine, and seemed to run just fine, after the 40 miles highway drive, I got off the highway, stopped at a light, then as I started going again, the truck started "chugging" a bit and I noticed that I was blowing quite a bit black smoke, (which has never happened like that before), As I continued to drive the chugging would stop once the turbo would engage. The chugging was worst in the low RPM's and mainly in gears 1 to 3. That was 4 days ago, the last 2 days the chugging didn't seem to really be there, but I have pretty much constant black smoke in any gear, at any speed, at any RPM, but obviously more so once the turbo engages. There doesn't seem to be a lack of power at all, and besides the smoke, it seems to be running fine. I got an oil change on day 3; 800 miles before it was due, and the shop said that the "old" oil was very clean. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

EGR valve is bad, the cooler is probably blown. EASY FIX.

Re: 2004 f350 6.0l

The vanes are stuck on the turbo. Caused by carbon build up on them. This turbo needs to be HOT 1000 deg to burn off. I had same problem with my 03 and set the brake and held power till 1000 deg for a good 5 min's Problem solved. Garrett confirmed the fix and said it was a problem.

Re: 2004 f350 6.0l

Are you kidding me?! 10k degrees will melt a motor down like nothing! I dont even know how you would get one that hot considering with 190cc injectors and 66 charger im at around 1400 degrees max EGT. Also the charger wont make smoke, just lack of boost. I promise the EGR valve is bad, i work on these trucks EVERYDAY.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY. 10k Degrees will melt a motor!

Re: 2004 f350 6.0l

It still wont black smoke from vaines, just wont boost, or It will bog. Dont use the "I dont type well" excuse, You dont typo something twice (numbers included). I own a Diesel shop too, Fancy that. Either way your not helping his problem, your adding to it. I will bet money that the EGR valve is bad. The Vaines do have problems, I'm not arguing that. Thats just not the problem at hand.

Oh and Welcome to the forums.
And I drive a fairly mean 6 liter.

Re: 2004 f350 6.0l

stock will defuel if it sees low boost so that wont smoke, could be the EGR valve, turbo or injectors as a way to start, im going to fix my EGR (when it goes, want to see how much tortue i can give the 6.0 first) the correct way, by throwing it in the scrap pile.

BTW, even with my tune i very rarely see over 1000* EGT
