1979 Brat - Tie Rods

Let me start out by saying I don't know a whole lot about cars, but I'm open minded and trying to learn. I recently bought a 1979 Subaru Brat in great condition. The tie rods seem to be loose. As it said on my Failed safety inspection - "significant play in tie rods"

I'm under the impression that I need to actually replace the tie rods rather than just have them adjusted. Thoughts?

And in considering replacement, I've search online, and can't seem to find exactly what I need. I find tie rod "ends" or listing for different years (and maybe they are compatible).

Any help would be much appreciated. Even more-some direction or a link to where to look for parts.

Thanks,
Sara

Re: 1979 Brat - Tie Rods

Who did the inspection?

Inner tie rods rarely go bad but everything may happen. They may be replaced without removing the rack-and-pinion but this is a big job.

Tie rod ends as far as I remember will have some play if you move them back and forth. If you move them sideways and feel some play you need to replace them or significant tire wear will follow.
