BTW, there was a high-speed chase in L.A. today. It lasted about an hour, and the guy got caught. During the chase he was doing 60 in residential areas, so the police backed way off, but the choppers stayed on him the whole time. I still don't get why people run...

This thread is so funny. Do you people believe EVERYTHING someone tells you? Impalas (I'm assuming new ones) with Corvette engines! Police cars of the 1960s-70s doing 150mph! New police cars doing 200!!!! Come on!

The RWD Caprice (I don't know of any Impala police cars of the 1990s, but there could have been) had "Corvette" engines...but so did the civilian cars. You could get an LT1 in a regular Caprice and it put out basically the same power as the police cars.

One of the "buff books" tested police cars in the late 1980s/early 1990s and clocked them. Top speed of the Crown Vic/Caprice was in the 110-120 range. Honestly. Aerodynamics of the cars would have prevented even the big block police cars from nearing 150...and the old-style light bars would have (and did on some occasions) act as a wing....you'd lose control above, say, 120.

Newer police cars will not top 130, and they don't need to. With all the flack from "high-speed" chases, police really can't get going too fast without getting into trouble (by their superiors or by the public). Besides, with helicopters and radio, super-fast cars are unnecessary.

There was an early question about international police cars. I've seen Volvos and Saabs primarily in the Nordic countries, and Alfa Romeos and Fiats driven by the Carbineri in Italy. I have heard of Porsches (rarely), Ford Cosworths, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW in some countries. I did read of BMW donating an M5 to the local sheriff's office in South Carolina. And I have heard of cars confiscated by drug busts being donated to police departments and (usually) DARE programs (one picture had a Lamborghini DARE car).

Just come here where I live they're replacing the crown-vics with the 2001 Impalas, don't call me a liar!!
and i didn't state that as a fact that there are corvette engines in them, i said I THINK they have corvette engines. That's what a cop told me when i was trying to make conversation so that he wouldn't bust me for underage drinking...... that's another story

I'm not denying that Impalas are being used by police forces...I've seen them. But they all have 3.8L V6s. They don't put "Corvette engines" in FWD Impalas...for police or the public or anyone.

To have an Impala with the Vette engine they'd have to make it rear wheel drive. Not gonna happen, at least until a production, civilian version is offered.

Maybe he had an old Impala, pre-1996.

Hehe, If you had your Bimmer at the time I think he would have said that to make himself sound fast. At least your putting your car knowledge to good use.

While cruising around down southern VA, I saw a F150 Lightning With lights, paint, and the whole works. It was bad ass.
