Knocking sound on a 1995 Geo Tracker
I have a 95 Geo tracker, Manual and 2 wheel drive. When it idles it sounds perfect and is really quite. However whenever I press the gas it starts to make a knocking noise. This happens regardless of if it is in neutral or any gear.
Any ideas as to what this may be? Thanks alot! |

check your EGR valve and make sure its not loose and if its not it might just be a valve.

Re: Knocking sound on a 1995 Geo Tracker
I don't want to frighten you, but when our tracker ran low on oil and burned a main bearing it sounded fine at idle, but when we got it up to about 2300 rpm the knocking started, all gears including neutral. It all depends on the the type of knock you are hearing. Light clicking or tapping is usually associated with the valve train (valves, cam, lifters, etc.). A lower tone, more of a clunk or whack type knock is usually crankshaft, i.e. main or rod bearings.
Let us know what you find and we'll try to help. Good luck finding and fixing it.

Re: Knocking sound on a 1995 Geo Tracker
The shop manual, generic automotive repair guides, experienced professional mechanics, & etc. all have hints on solving knocking sounds. (That's where all the rest came from.)

Re: Knocking sound on a 1995 Geo Tracker
Yeah, kind of dumb to let the oil run out like that. Certainly paid for it. Installilng a new crank wasn't difficult but the car was down for quite a while as we gathered the funds and tools (engine crane, engine stand) to do the job.
