1996 Tracker Dying Out? Please Help...

My problem is when I am going to make a stop and push the clutch in the tracker wants to die or drop down to 100 rpm's and idle back up to normal. I have changed the egr valve (twice), egr valve solenoid (sp?), iat sensor, fuel filter, spark plugsair filter. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Same problem of dying at stops

I just bought a 1996 Geo Tracker 4x4 and am having the same problem at stops. I dont know how to check the codes so I do not know if I have one. But it stalls out whenever I slip the transmission in neutral. My feet are getting tired of the double foot shuffle to keep it going. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Runs fine other than the stalling.
Thanks

Unhappy Re: 1996 Tracker Dying Out? Please Help...

My 96 4x2 does the exact samething... Have had it in and out of the shop for a year now... local shop replaced each and every part related to EGR system and still comes up on their computer as a EGR problem... They told me to take it to a dealer and the dealer said I had a bad ECM (computer)... got a used ECM for 100.00 bucks and had the local shop put it in... 1 1/2 months later like clock work the Check engine lights on again and local shop says the reading says EGR again... They know that cannot be correct... I fould this article on the web this week and faxed it to my local shop... Will let you know if it fixes the problem...

Re: 1996 Tracker Dying Out? Please Help...

hello all, guess what?
my dad has a 96 tracker and it does the same thing on start up or when I come to a stop. It keeps throwing codes also. We did find though that if you start it when its cold and let it run for a couple of minutes the idle will drop to 100 then work its way back up, but only if you don't hit the gas. once that goes back up you are good to go, and it won't want to stall anymore during that trip.

good luck, and if you find a solution. let me know

hear is all of your answers had the problem and fixed it
you have to pull the egr off and all the parts its bolts to take carburator cleaner and a clothes hanger and clean all the pipes and passages going to the egr out one of them is stoped up so it is going to keep doing it and it will eventually burn the rings up from cylinder overheating

I don't have a Tracker (yet) but I am going to look at one I suspect is having this very problem. Would anyone have any pictures of the tube (or EGR valve) that needs to be cleaned? So I know exactly where to look while I am in their driveway.
Thanks,
Gumby_CT
ps. garion05- did this fix your problem?

This is what I did myself and fixed it. It runs better now than the day I bought it. Very simple. Only thing I don't understand is I lost 2mpg I was getting 30mpg now 28mpg but it runs much better so worth doing.

Re: 1996 Tracker Dying Out? Please Help...

Alot of car guys who work on there cars take the EGR off and block it. I've done it to all of my cars but have not yet done it to the Tracker. Once the summer hits I'm going to do it, right now I just need a reliable car till i can pull the Camaro SS out of storage.

I did it myself, not to hard to do and worked great. Its just the tube that goes down to egr is stopped up on each end. Take off that tube and clean hole in the intake and down at egr and see if this helps i used a screwdriver to break it up its just carbon blocking the holes and then spray carb cleaner in there and fixed it. let us know if it helps.
