96 tracker engine shakes bad

I have a 1996 Geo tracker w/1.6 engine (no california emisions). The engine shakes terrible at idle and has no power. The check engine light is also on. I am going to do a MAJOR TUNE UP to it. But were is the connector to scan for codes and what does it look like ???

I think it is OBD II and under the dash just below the steering wheel. Good luck, Dave

Re: 96 tracker engine shakes bad

i'm having this same problem w/ my son's 96 tracker.... what did you figure out ? I'm sure it's a timing issue, on this 96 i dont see where you can adjust the distribitor cap to advance or retard the timimg,

Re: 96 tracker engine shakes bad

Good chance that you have a worn timing pulley and keyway, (and also the key slot in the crankshaft) There is a bolt that holds the dist in place, to adjust timing just loosen the bolt and turn the dist. If you have the worn pulley, try adjusting the timing to about 18 degrees advanced (just to test) if it runs better the pulley is bad and it's a bit of a job to repair. Ed

Re: 96 tracker engine shakes bad

we just replaced the timing belt and crank gear the key way looked in good shape, i guess we couldve gotten timing 180 off, but was pretty sure timimg marks were alined, and just advanced the cap, that made a little smoother idle but just doesnt have the power to pull itself, revs good in park and/or nuetral

Re: 96 tracker engine shakes bad

How was it running before you replaced the belt? You might find some help here: Ed

Re: 96 tracker engine shakes bad

the code that showed up today said o2 sensor, top bank (closes to manifold) has anybody had this w/ the effects we are having, wont hardly pull its self when in gear but revs fine in N or P we have installed new plugs and crank gear and timing belt, all timing marks appear to be alined correctly, just dont wanna spend the 140.00 on the o2 sensor if this isnt the problem, I guess im tring to find out what other peoples trackers acted like when their o2 sensors went out, any feed back will be great

Re: 96 tracker engine shakes bad

did you check the spark plug wires .i was driving the other day all of a sudden
the engine loss power and started shaking. i change plugs then cap still shaking then i pulled out each wire while it was running 1 2 3 was ok number4
made a little difference. finally i pulled back the cover plug on the wire and looked down into the valve cover where the spArk plug wire goes and it was arcing all over the place. i just replaced the wires 11/2 to 2 years ago.
i hope this helps.
