96 tracker egr problems detailed help appreciated

i have a 96 tracker with 85k on it. quite often when i push the clutch in and coast to a stop the motor starts to die...i have read these forums quite a bit and i am quite certain this is an egr problems. i am very unfamiliar with motors, etc. i am an electronics guy. i know i need to take the egr apart and clean it. i know where the egr is but i am unsure what hoses to disconnect and how to go about disassebling the egr. any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is not so much cleaning the egr valve it is more cleaning the passages for the air flow. Most times it is blocked in the intake manifold. If you keep searching the post, you will find the details for cleaning these passages.

the egr valve is really easy to take off and to clean it just get a small wire brush and clean out the openings as best you can but as far as cleaning the holes on the engine its really a pain to get to but if you can get to it try the brush but make sure you keep it vaccumed out so none of it gets inside.

hope this helps

Just went though all of that, had to replace the EGR and the Vacuum regulator valve as well to fix it,I also cleaned all the tubing that ran from the egr, there is also a metal tube on the pass side of engine that was, well ,looked like a coal pile in there.

I had been cleaning them with carb cleaner but that would last about a 100 miles before I had to do it againe.

I can say the main problom was in the Vac valve,I ripped it open and all the rubber flapper stuff in there was rotten.

On a 96, if you have egr problems, you would be getting a check engine light and setting a P0400 trouble code. Maybe that's not your problem? Ed
