Hi guys,
I have read numerous posts on detonation and what it sounds like and the description varies anywhere from a dinging (pen hitting a glass bottle) to a hammer hitting an anvil! My question is what does a timing chain sound like? lol...I hear a slight rattle in 2nd gear when I let go of the gas by the way in other gears you can hear it also, but I think that in 2nd gear it is the most noticeable..sounds like it is coming from the passenger side, but I am not sure. When I resume to press the gas just a little the sound quiets and when the revs are higher it's not there..is the timing chain only making that rattle because there is less tension when I let off the gas then there is when I press the gas? I also did this test on my 99 G20...Turned the A/C on..went up a street that wasn't leveled and put it in a higher gear when I wasn't up to speed yet...I heard a lot of noise, but I don't think I heard pinging or knocking..my best guess is that since I was in such a high gear and driving slow that the engine was working harder than it has to thus making the engine somewhat noiser than before. Is what I said correct? If not, please correct me! Also, if my car was detonating the knock sensor would retard the timing anyways, right? Car still feels somewhat fast for a big SR20 powered car...I also checked my spark plugs and aside from some deposits on the insulator there appears to be no cracks or distored spark plugs.
Thanks in advance for any info.!!
