1994 Camry.... Catalytic or not????

Hey Guys......

Long time since I've been here! My '94 Camry just hit 205K and still runs like a new car. Unfortunately, I need a front pipe and am SOOOOO confused on whether the car takes a catalytic convertor or not. Presently there is one, but the connector has snapped right off behind it, and the flex pipe is now toast. I have been shopping online for the pipe and find it with a cat and also without. Now, because the cat currently has a catalytic convertor, I thought that is what it took. But, when I read the sellers remarks, the pipe with the cat cannot be shipped to NY. Can I run this old girl w/o a cat convertor???? Will it screw up the car? I have no clue what to do here, but I need the car and it's off the road until I can get this exhaust replaced.

Thanks for any help!
Jackie

The ones that come with a cat are probably not 50 state compliant, ie not compliant with NY emissions laws. You could run it without a cat, but then it wouldn't be legal.

Can't a dealer's parts department tell from your VIN what you should use? If you haven't already done so, find the part numbers you need from Toyota and then locate the parts wherever you can.

Thanks guys!
What I'm not undestanding is; if the EPA wants the cats for cleaner exhaust... WHY would NY state make that illegal??? Seems to me NY would WANT me to use a Catalytic Convertor. Doesn't that make sense?????

It might have been a political decision rather than a humanitarian one.

Not all cats are created equal. Just because it is a catalytic converter doesn't mean it does the job as well as another one. Basically, it might meet the requirements for one state, but it didn't pass NY's more stringent exhaust emission laws.

Remember one thing. Since it’s pre 1996 they don’t have to hook it up to Big Brothers computerized snitch machine. Hence you get nothing but an old fashioned inspection. Soooooo nobody’s gonna know or get To care what you have on there.
Enjoy the ride while you can with no screwing around fixing useless senseless 🙈💸💸💸💸Gas cap codes and the like. I always advise guys with older cars to make sure to get theirs inspected at the good old boy local shops. Treasure that good old boy like he was family. I give my guy 30-50 gallons of waste oil a year to heat his shop and am happy to do it. The ones that help keep you going rather than lightening your pockets🤬💸💸💸💸. Such is life in Neuyorkistan.........

The '94 V-6 1MZ-FE Camry is OBD-II compliant and there is the possibility that you have to have the correct exhaust system configuration or not pass emissions. The '94 I-4 is OBD-I and not compatible with the current emissions testing methods.

JH32552 has not stated what engine he has. He should check the sticker under the hood for the details. IMO, no matter what the case, get the part numbers from a Toyota parts counter and install whatever Toyota used originally.

I wonder how you managed to keep a 94 in this salt mine? It must have been owned by the little old lady from Pasadena ( Saranac Lake) who hybrinated with the bears all winter or like the smart ones took it to Florida all winter. My buddy bought a 03 Silverado 2500 from up there a while back. Man, I’ve seen better wrecks sitting in the Atlantic Ocean.
