CAI Grand AM 03

I've been looking at some CAI's for the 3.1 V6. When I look at the original air intake it seems to me that the cold air is just going in the exact same place and I don't see how the new intake will change much. Can anyone explain what if any difference I'll see?

Re: CAI Grand AM 03

The CAI has much less resistance than the stock intake. That's the main difference.

Re: CAI Grand AM 03

Is this for a '03 Grand Am?

From '99 and up the V6 engine in the Grand Am is the VIN "E" 3400 not 3100.

Re: CAI Grand AM 03

Yes the factory intake system is very restrictive.
Here are some pics of what the 99+ stock air intake tubes look like...

A CAI uses a 3" pipe with no restrictions.

Re: CAI Grand AM 03

Here is the CAI installed on our Alero. True FWI (fender well intake) from MP Racing. This same one will fit the Grand Ams with the V6 3400 engine.

Nice intake sound.

Re: CAI Grand AM 03

I like that tube setup you have Bob. Looks like it keeps the filter up higher then the one above.
Mine gets wet all the time.

Thanks. Not really JC. Remember I built a plexiglass shield around the cone filter under the fender to minimize water intrusion. Would not want a hydrolock.

But surprising we haven't had any problems with it since it is in New York state now and so far is passing the winter test.

Re: CAI Grand AM 03

If you were to submerge the filter while its running you certainly will suck up some water. That much would be bad.

Mine get soaked in the rain usualy but it doesnt/hasnt caused any problem yet.
The one I showed above, the filter does point down. As long as I dont drive thru water over a foot deep I dont see any problems.

I do plan on getting a "J" bend for mine and raise it up as high as possible.

One time when I used to drive my SE during the winter I used to drive thru a lot of snow drifts. I packed my fender so full of snow it killed the motor from lack of air.
