Am I able to just clean this air oil separator out and just reuse it or what exactly isdoes the inside contain? What would you recommend using?

Re: Can I clean air oil separator in 2.4l ld9 99 grand am?

I was in the middle of doing a head swap and I was just wondering if it was something I could take off and clean or replace to make it run better. I couldn't find it at any of the local parts stores. Also how do I clean the carbon buildup off the top of the pistols without making it worse. I'll see if I can attach a pic. Thanks.

Re: Can I clean air oil separator in 2.4l ld9 99 grand am?

The oil/air separators tend to get gunked up over time, ESPECIALLY if the vehicle is used mainly for short trips, causing moisture to build up....

Just remove it.....shake most of the crap out of it......take something like "Brake Klean" to break up what is clinging to the inside, and then flush it out....then blow out with compressed air......

As for cleaning piston tops, it has it's pros and cons......getting rid of carbon is good because it lowers compression which could cause pre-ignition....however, if you attempt to clean a top, and don't get it all, you risk a "chunk" coming off later, getting stuck on a valve "face"(contact area)....

Best, way, naturally is to remove the piston completely.....

Here is one way to do it, at your own risk:

Follow all instuctions to the letter.....especialy tips and warnings...

Thumbs up Re: Can I clean air oil separator in 2.4l ld9 99 grand am?

Hey thanks for the quick response! This is my first time doing something like this so I just want to make sure I get everything right even if it does take me a few weeks. I will take your advice and get started putting everything back together this weekend. This car already has 192,000 miles and it is only used in my carpool to work about 1000 miles per month.
