Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
I'm going to add muffler springs, not something I've done before. Here's the mount on the exhaust pipe, should have placed it before painting but I forgot so I'll re-spray these parts later.
It's made from a small strand of wire from an audio cable. I did try using stiffer wire at first but it was a pain to work in to the right shape, the audio wire is quite flexible.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Springs usually raise the appearance of a build, will surely be great!

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Thanks Christophe, glad you're enjoying it. I've spent enough time looking at other builds on this forum, hopefully I can give something back with this WIP.
I've been working on the exhaust silencers. I spayed the part semi-gloss black and then masked 2mm at each end of the main barrel, painted silver by hand on the end and then coated the whole part with Jonson Klear. Once dried I removed the tape, this gave a slight difference in sheen where the tape was. I then placed 1.3mm round bolt heads from a Top Studio P.E. set using PVA (white) glue. Using PVA allowed me to move the bolt heads more easily than superglue, and clean up is easy. The bolt heads sat a little proud for my liking so I again coated the whole part in Klear, softening the definition.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Forgot to mention that the thin silver ring was a thin strip of aluminium tape.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
The wheels are getting there. I sprayed Zero white basecoat followed by Zero Marlboro Red with Zero gloss to finish. The edges of the rims were hand brushed with a mix of acrylic silver and black to get the graphite colour. I think I'll paint a dark wash over this later to even out the brush painting and darken the finish a little.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
I've been doing a batch of priming and basecoating, nothing worth posting pictures of.
But here's how I make the banjo connectors found on the end brake hoses. Take a piece of cable of the right diameter, then drill a small hole through the sheath that's left. Place a tiny drop of thick CA glue over the hole. Thin will dry to quickly and not give you time if the rod doesn't fit in properly at the first attempt! Then insert a piece of plastic rod through the hole and let it dry. Carefully cut either side of the rod and fill the hole each side of rod with a drop of CA. You could of course place a scale bolt through the hole at the last stage instead of filling it. I'm going to use a P.E. bolt head over the filled hole.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
I think these details that you add will really raise the appearance of the bike. I like when people detail from scratch material and own thinking rather than just buying a super detail set from TS or the like.
Rims look great, hand painted edges look really crisp! |

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Had a go a scribing a couple of the panel lines on the front cowling. I've had the scriber for years but never used it after messing up once! This time I went lightly and slowly for the first 5 passes before apply a bit more pressure. It worked!
You can clearly see the different between the scribed part (left) and what it was like before. Will make a difference once a few coats of paint are on.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Super! Did you make a guide or just scribe free hand?

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Freehand. Even the corners weren't to hard to follow. The other side was a bit trickier as the existing groove wasn't quite as deep.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Just made an accidental discovery... at a cost though!
I thought I'd use isopropyl alcohol to clean any grease off the exhausts I'd coated in black enamel gloss before spraying Alclad chrome. Not such a great idea as it started to affect the paint. Not the end of the world, but it lead me to think if it would work as a paint stripper as I'm re-doing the frame to get a shinier finish. I've used Halfords (UK auto store) primer on this and it's been slow to come off, but the alcohol has worked straight away. Despite the initial mistake, this will save time!

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83
Exhaust have been coming along today. I've only ever done a tiny bit of heat staining before so I was a bit nervous about trying it - only one way to learn though!
As it happens, I'm pleased with the results and not dissimilar to some reference pictures I have. I might do a bit more work on them, but will leave it for the moment to have a think about it. It's Alclad chrome, with various Alcad clear colours over the top. Weld seams were masked with thin strips of Tamiya tape and a couple of tiny blobs of Blu-Tack in places.
