Subaru 1.8L EA82 Engine
I'm just curious as to a few things regarding these Engines.
1) What's the difference between the 1.8L EA82 and the 1.8L EA82T? Is the 1.8L EA82T just a turbo or what? 2) What year(s) and model(s) are these engines from? Thanks. |

EA82 motors were introduced in 1985, they have dual timing belts and the distributor is on the back. I do believe that the T on the end was for the turbo's. They were used in all 85-89 except hatchback and brat, those used the EA81's, after that I'm not too sure...

To add to the above, the EA82T (turbo) has different heads, intake and exhaust manifold than its NA cousins. The Turbo also has different pistons for lower compression.
The EA82 was available in turbo for up to 90 (Loyale) and SPFI form until 94

Re: Subaru 1.8L EA82 Engine
I recently became the proud owner of a 1986 subaru brat GL. I am interested in putting in an EA82 turbo, is it possible to put this engine in my car? It is a manual transmission.

Re: Subaru 1.8L EA82 Engine
Thanks for the website link. I do not currently have the vehicle i will be picking it up tomorrow. I know it has the EA81 and i want to add more power to it, i figured it might be easier to just put in a new engine. But i will definitely send some of my questions to the other webforum as well.

Re: Subaru 1.8L EA82 Engine
The EA82 was available from 85-94 in GL, DL, GL-10, RX, and XT
The xt versions are the same, except with flat belt pulleys. There are 3 variants, a carburetor with hitachi or carter-weber, with 8.5:1 compression ratio, and single port intake. There was also an SPFI (single point fuel injection) which shared the same head design, with the addition of a threaded egr port, and the block has a compression of 9.0:1. And yet, there were MPFI and MPFI turbo, both sharing the same block and heads, with the turbo version being 7.7:1 compression, and the n/a variant at 9.5:1 compression. These engines can be swapped in place of an ea81, as far as the bellhousing and motor mount fitments. There will be clearance issues with the distributor and the brake master cylinder. Swapping in a ea82t in place of an ea81 will require a modification to the engine crossmember to clear the turbo up-pipe. This is not an issue if you are replacing an ea81t. The same is true for replacing an ea82 with an ea8t. Otherwise, the turbo engine crossmember can be fitted to a not turbo car to retrofit in a turbo engine of either ea81 or ea81.
