clogged fuel filter
When you let your tank run so low, you probably sucked dirt or sedement from the bottom of the tank into your fuel pump filter. The fuel pump in your car is located in the tank and has a sock type filter attached to the bottom of the pump. You may have to drop the tank and pull out your pump to check it. Since these pumps rely on fuel to cool them, you could have also burned the pump up by letting the fuel run so low and running the pump trying to start it.
