Newbie here, but not to Hummers..
Howdy! I'm more of a Ford guy than anything else but I happen to be a Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic for the US Army so I have over 4 years of experience wrenching on every part of Hummvees.
I don't know how many similarities there are between models, but most of the diesel engine and suspension/drivetrain should be very very similar, so don't hesitate to bombard me with questions! -AJ

Actually the new H1 still being made by AM General the only difference is that GM is the new owner of AM General. And the H2 is made by GM not by AM General.

Hi...I recently picked up a 1997.5 H1 and I am having some trouble that maybe someone could help me out with...during a weekend drive one of my headlights blew out due to rain getting into the power source...shortly after this i started having problems with the trans...ultimately, it would no longer shift into the higher gears...my first thought was that i blew out the trans and lost the high gears first...then i learned about the 'limp home mode' that the trans computer will put the truck into when an electrical malfunction is detected...we cleared the computer and it then shifted back into the higher gears again...but now i seem to be having a speed control issue...i used to be able to lock the rpm's at about 2400 and just cruise...now it becomes very erratic when u get to about 2300-2500 rpm in the overdrive gear predominantly...it wants to keep pulling instead of maintaining a speed...any ideas??
