92 Dodge Ram250 Van stalls Intermittently
Hi,
My van runs fine for the most part, but sometimes the RPMs drop too low and it stalls... most often when I am turning a corner. I have gotten very good at shifting into N, starting it back up and shifting back into OD, all while negotiating the corner w/o power steering. It has never refused to restart. The drop in RPMs seems to happen most when I am making a left turn. Next in frequency is a right turn or if I have to stop too fast. Sometimes it may also stall if I start it and go quickly into R to back out. If I don't give it a moment to get up to speed, it will die. Also, it seems to happen more often in real damp, wet weather. Not when it has just rained, but when it has rained for a few days and the air is dripping water. I haven't tried anything yet because I haven't the foggiest idea where to start. I'm from the old school of adjusting the points and checking the advance. Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks, Grey |

Remove the IAC valve from the back of the throttle body and clean out the inside of the hole it came out of. Also clean the plunger on the IAC valve itself. If that doesn't solve the problem you could be looking at replacing the cap & rotor, maybe the plug wires too.

Thanks for the quick response, Alloro.
If the IAC is located under the dog house, this is going to be fun because this is a conversion van and there is a lot of carpeting to be removed first. I don't imagine it can be reached from under the hood because there doesn't seem to be much available within reach at that point. Again, Thanks. Grey |

Re: 92 Dodge Ram250 Van stalls Intermittently
Hi Again,
That was one great link. At least now I have some idea of what to look for. I'm sure my 318 will be different than those pics because I don't believe it has a carb, it starts right away and I have never had to prime it, but I'm sure it won't be so different that I couldn't find it now. Thanks, again, for the help. Have a great day. Grey |

There's no carb on the engine in the link either, it fuel injected.

Oh! Ok, Thanks. That should make it easy... Once I get the DogHouse off.

Thanks for the info, Bratt. It doesn't sound like it should be toooo difficult... once I get the dog House off, that is. I understand that's a lot of fun, and it doesn't look like there is a terrible lot of room... especially for someone with looong legs.

Check the wires exiting the distributor body...the wires that come from the induction pickup. They sometimes develop internal breaks from engine vibration. Start the engine and give those wires a tug. If the engine dies, replace the induction unit. About $55 at NAPA.

Re: 92 Dodge Ram250 Van stalls Intermittently
Thank you all for taking the time to post your responses to my problem. Unfortunately, I was not able to find out what the problem was because with my wife getting sick and needing to be driven to a medical center about 80 miles away every now and again, I bought a nice little 1998 4 cyl. that will certainly save me a bundle on gas.
Anyway, I sold the '92 Ram van yesterday. Again, Thanks. Grey |
