overheating agin
Hey yall.ive got a 03 montana 200k got the van had blown intake and heads did all the work myself.ever since back together its temp runs half to 3/4 on gauge so I checked compression it was good intake wouldnt hold vac so agi. Replaced gaskets. Bled air and runs good with a slight skip at idle.
 but every time im at a stop light temp slowly rises and drops as soon as I start moving.also when I park the van at normal temp go in store come out and crank it up gauge will be 3/4 the way up.Ive tried all I know and researched but cant seem to get this one ive got a egr and o2 heater code but have been there since I got van they return tho if cleared.id appreciate any guidance yall can give im at a loss on this one |

The readings you're getting don't make any sense. It sounds like your temperature gauge is lying to you. This could be an issue with the thermostat and/ or temperature sensor.

Are you referring to when I shut it off and the temp is much higher? Thats been confusing the mess outta me I know gas gauge is flakey.guess it be a cheap test to swap sensor im worried its in the wiring ther has been alot of that with this van.
Im just scared to turn it over to the wife me be out of town and it run hot on her.lol belt broke on her she drove till low coolant light was on and then when temp gauge drooped kept drivin lol |

Is your cooling fan working?
Next step would be to, compare gage reading with data from a scan tool.... Thermostat replaced? Should have been done when the intake was off(easy to do then)...... How is your heater core? Try back flushing it......I know you don't use heat in the summer, but the core acts as the "bypass" for the system....if partially plugged can cause engine temp to be a little higher..... Also, if the cooling system has been properly "burped", of all air, and have proper coolant level, some vans had an external auxiliary cooling pump, that may be bad.....it is located under the cross bar on the driver's side, if there is one.... What does this mean? "intake wouldnt hold vac".... |

Yea, I'm not sure what you mean about the intake not holding vacuum also? How about pressure testing the cooling system? Pump up the system to about 15, 18 psi and see if it holds for a few hours. You need to do that when cold as the cooling temps of the engine when hot will go from pressure to vacuum (that's how the overflow tank works). If the head gaskets were bad, there should have been some gunk in the coolant lines and radiator---maybe flush the radiator out seperately? I'm thinking remove the radiator inlet and outlet hoses and use an outboard pump in a bucket of vingar to flush out the radiator?
