1996 F250 Powerstroke keeps burning up starters
my 96 f250 powerstroke keeps eating starters. About every 6 months I have to replace it. I have tried different brands, stater solenoids, and batteries and I cannot figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

How does it sound when you start it, does it grind or continue to "spin" after you have released the key? When you get the starter tested what is the part that is bad? Have they told you if it is the solenoid or the brushes? One thing I have seen happen is an exhaust leak or routing has been routed too close to the starter. Is there a sheild on the starter? If they get too hot I have seen that create issues with them. |

Could be a damaged or warped flywheel.

The starter has never made a grinding noise and it always shuts off when I release the ignition switch. I will definately check in the brushes. Thank you for the info on the flywheel, I will check it out asap. |

Re: 1996 F250 Powerstroke keeps burning up starters
Stock style starters suck, I replaced mine with one too. Then I put a good one on it. Search for user dbelectrical on ebay. Get the side drive gear reduction starter. About 145 bucks shipped to my door when I got one, cranks WAY faster than the stock one ever did. Ever notice how super duties crank so fast? They have the same style starters.
It is two bolt instead of our three, but it mounts right up, just don't use one bolt. All the super duties are two bolt, starters from them work too, but expect to spend some coin for one at napa....
