Question Car Does not Want to Change Gears

I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata - automatic transmission. In the last few days it has gotten to the point it does not want to use 1st or 4th gear. I'll get up to speed, then the car will shudder and the car will go from 4th to 3rd. When I stop it will still show 3rd and sometimes 2nd gear but it won’t go back down into first. It’s real aggravating. At first I thought maybe the clutch, but it’s not like its slipping out because once it’s out it will not go back into 4th gear. Usually, if you turn the car off for a few minutes and let it sit, they'll work fine again for a while.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Car Does not Want to Change Gears

I realize that it being an automatic means it doesn't do the clutch like a manual but I wasn't sure how else to say it. I've checked the levels and I think they are all ok. But I will check it again this afternoon.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Has the trans fluid/filter ever been changed? Mileage on the vehicle?
Get the (DTC) codes read for any Transmission codes.

Re: Car Does not Want to Change Gears

Try a bottle of "TransMedic" made by "Gunk".

Re: Car Does not Want to Change Gears

sounds like the vehicle speed sensor , it will trip your light, if the light is on take it to auto zone or advanced, they can read it for free, but this is a dealer part, my suggestion is junkyard, or carquest i got mine for 85.00 i havent put mine in yet, i will let you know what happens mine started acting up last week, when i turn it off it stops it is intermittent, you just have to wait for the light to stay on, to know for sure it is an easy fix it seems like,

Re: Car Does not Want to Change Gears

just installed output speed sensor simple fix i am out 90.00 after tax took care of problem, take out battery, air filter housing, all you need is a ten millimeter socket with a twelve inch extension and a ratchet, the socket will fit the battery bolts, the air filter housing which is just three bolts, ant the one bolt holding the sensor in, piece of cake, you will see the sensor on top of the transmission very easy to get to,
