Angry 2000 Hyundai Accent

Does anyone know why when filling my gas tank it keeps starting and stopping. No matter how slow I try to put gas in it keeps stopping. Pulling the gas nozzel out to the very end doesn't help. Can someone please help me?? Thanks
Ron

Re: 2000 Hyundai Accent

The evap system on these cars are notorious for doing this. It's caused by you overfilling the tank until it's spilling out. The gas floods the evap system and the charcoal canister, and all the little bits of charcoal float out and plug up the evap system. It's expensive to fix, you need a new canister, and a new purge valve, then you have to clean out all the lines. It's a real PITA. A quick fix it to pull the larger hose off the canister, but then you will start getting "check engine" lights. See the hmaservice.com website for info on correcting this issue.

Re: 2000 Hyundai Accent

You can do like I do. I have the same problem.

I have the hose loose enough so I can just reach under the car at the gas station and take the hose off long enough to fill the tank. Then I put it back on. That way I avoid the check engine light.

Even if you leave the hose off, it 's not really such a big problem. Some gas will evaporate, especially if it's hot. But it won't leak out.

I have a 1999 Elantra. I assume your car is not too much different. Under the car, near the fuel spout, is a square black plastic thing with some hoses. That's the fuel canister. Pull off the big hose, and fill gas to your hearts content.
