i didn't know that renault made such a mistake back in the early days.
I drive a 5 gt turbo for a year now. and everything breaks but the engine keeps on running. The problem with the old renaults is the rust and the bad wiring. i like the handling and the power...and the engine is just indistructable.... The r21 is a good car. quit comfy. lots of space. And the r21turbo quadra is the top of the bill. expensive but a very nice car... Was that thing also imported in the USA? Derby

Re: Opinions on renault.
What mistake are you speaking of?
I've never even heard of an r21, but many models were renamed for sale in the U.S.

when the manufacturer don't give any kind of support to its buyers i call that a mistake...but yeah they're frence.....
The r21 is a comfortable and spacy family car. like a honda prelude...something like that.. Derby

Re: Opinions on renault.
I loved the R25 Baccara, when I was young, my neighbours had one in the late 80's, with the telephone, nice leather, electric seats (rear and front), voice which tells you that a door is open or many othjer things, etc. funny for a young boy
You can find details about R21 and R25 in the USA... But these versions were not nice to me. http://www.mopar-owners-club.com/enc...agle_prem.html

Re: Opinions on renault.
I have driven four Renault 16's pre 1984.
When i got them they had done around 200,000 kms. Driving characteristics were excellent ! Rust was the biggest problem because the wheelsuspension tended to rot away or the jack went through the floorboards when a tyre needed to be changed. Changing a starter was a mission underneath the exhaust manifold pipe, and a special nr 17 key had to purchased to undo the top bolt otherwise the manifold had to come off. One of those jobs when you are driving older cars. The column gear change was great. I see if i can copy one or two analogue photo's to this forum, not sure if the 16 made it to the USA.

Re: Opinions on renault.
My family had a yellow 16 when I was a kid. I loved it. We used it for everything from moving antiques, to carrying goats, to 'off roading' in the forest.
One of my best memories of our Renault 16 was the voice activated windscreen wipers that would go on when anyone (under the age of 10) said "ON!". Of course it took me a while to realize that it only worked when my dad was driving, and when he had his foot on the floor mounted wiper button. Looked just like this one: |

Re: Opinions on renault.
Great trick your dad played on you with those voice activated windscreen wipers.
Thanks for posting that photo too. I have only seen one R 16 in New Zealand. One of my memories of my red renault 16 was the leaking head gasket which i used to drive around with during the winter. The engine was also noisy because of a crack in the exhaust manifold. It sounded like a diesel and when stationary, big steamclouds came from under the hood, looked very cool while it got noticed by other road users. Of course i kept the radiator full with water to avoid the engine ceizing. It lasted for about 6 weeks, and then the engine became impossible to start so it was written off. Became too expensive to get repaired. Also the warrant was due and it wouldn't pass anyway. Still the driving characteristics were always superb. The spare tyre atop of the engine was also a funny look with the engine against the firewall. Paris Rhone alternator, Ducellier starter, Jaeger instruments, some of those beautifull French names. Hmmm i wish i still had a R 16.
