Unhappy 89 pontiac 6000 le

Hey, pontiac forum, forum good. Hi, guys I'm new and have a new problem. About 8 days ago my station wagon started cutting off on the road. the check engine light blinks on and off quickly disabling me from obtaining an accurate diagnostic reading to narrow down the problem.
I decided to replace the air control sensor, crankshaft sensor, and the fuel filter. I added octane fuel booster and $14 worth of premium gas. the problem persist. note, when I'm driving the check engine light flickers
on and off. if it stays on, the car shuts off. But, if it goes off quickly the
car will gradually remain running. I've tried it all, and heard it all. Some say I need another computer box (MAT). If anyone is familiarized with, or may have had a similar problem please, I could use your expertise.
Note also: my fuel pump in the tank is working. I changed the control
module beneath the ignition coils. I have not changed the
oxygen sensor, and yes, this car will cut off any where

There is a Diagnostic connection somwhere under the dash.. on the driver side... Shops use this to hook up a computer and read the Trouble codes that the ECM stores.

You can do this your self by jumping the two terminals that are right next to eachother.

Turn the Ingition to the Run position, but with the car off.

Jump those terminals.

The "check engine" light will start to flash.. Once.. then a pause then Two flashes next to each other... then a longer pause.

then you'll see it do that again.. one flash... then two flashes... Thats a code 12... It'll flash that three times.

After the third time it'll start to flash real trouble codes... Like a 13 or 24.. etc. It'll flash each code three times before moving onto the next code.

When all the codes have been flashed, it'll return to the code 12 again.

You can look up what sensors the codes refer to in a repair manuel, or look online.

Thats your best way to start.

Good advice above. This procedure will display current as well as stored codes so it's not necessary for the check engine light to be on at time of testing.

your flashing check engine light may indicate an ecm going bad, so follow madcats advice, and if you don't have any codes stored, the computer is bad.
