2006 Tecate Baja 1000

I see Honda came out on top this year in the bike classes and getting the overall win, as usual beating out the 4 wheelers.

Big difference this year is the model of the winning bikes. Modded Honda CRF450Xs over the XR650s.

Haha I saw that. The good old XR650's just not cutting it anymore.

So when you are you getting your CRF450R?

I'm still debating that one. The used CRF450s are just too dogged out so I have been looking at the 2007 model. A dealer up in Deming, NM where we bought my son's first Honda XR100 and subsequently a Yamaha YZ85 has them for an "out the door" price of $6199.00. No sales tax either since I'm in Texas. Only a 120 mile drive. Would make a nice X-Mas present but I don't plan on racing it like my CR250R. I'm getting too old now.

BTW - I can barely handle the CR since the engine was redone by Pro Circuit.

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

^^ Haha you'll love the bike. It is going to be far torqueier than the CR of course but it makes for a good time. If you really want to get good with the 450R take it off roading on some enduro trails. That bike will shape you up in a hurry. I know mine did. When I first bought it I went from a XR400 to the CRF450R and after the second week or so I went WOT in the forest and it took me straight into a tree knocking me unconcious lol.

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

High probability if I decide to get it I won't keep it stock. No one here has a stock CRF450R to keep the edge on the 250cc two-strokes. Here is a pic to give you an idea of the wide open riding areas we have and basically all year around riding. Really don't need to worry about trees but the cactus plays hell with you. You can really haul ass down a trail. Good Baja 1000 training grounds. However, I did have a rattlesnake try to take a bite on my MX riding boots one time.

Wow that is completely different from the riding I do. My bike would love it there with the wide open are but I mostly do forest riding. Keeps you your feet at all times though. lol And I am pretty sure I have that same jeresey and pants you are wearing somewhere in the house haha. That is a very nice clean bike you have there.

Here is my kind of riding:

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

Yeah, you'd like it out here. Fast riding, plenty of dust and roost. I recall the MX pants are Thor Core circa 2004 and the jersey is Core 2005. Also, I have some cheapy Answer gear - pants and jersey I got for around $20 total on EBay. Black with yellow trim.

The best part is little or no mud so the bike stays fairly clean. Just dust and sand. One of my favorite things to do is challenge the big bore ATVs on the sand dunes and some periodic drag racing. On a bike you can travel fast along the side of a sand dune where an ATV is near tip over or the rider has to use alot of body english. Going up the dunes is no problem either. Our jumps and the posture of the bike looks so much better cresting a dune.

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

^^ Haha I love wasting those big ATV's (raptos especially) at the motox track in drags on the side and on the track. In fact we have these annual drag races around here for off road vehicles and though I have never entered the dirtbikes always take the gold.

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

The Baja 1000 results alone support this 100%. The overall winner was on a CRF450X with a time of 18:17:50 in Pro Motorcycle Class 22 (over 250cc). In contrast the best time for any ATV was 22:37:46, Pro ATV Class 25 (over 250cc). Almost 4 hours time difference. Of course, it was a Honda TRX450R.

I hate it on open practice days at the local MX track. Those ATVs get in the way and it is no fun.

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

I agree, its like having a hummer on a grand prix track.......too slow to keep up with everyone and too big to get around all of them.

And there would be no way I would do a Baja 1000 with an ATV lol. Not as stable nor as fast as the bikes. Just my .02

In Baja 1000 I'd be worried about the class 8 trucks running you over! In Dust to Glory they had a few close ones, especially around the pits.

Re: 2006 Tecate Baja 1000

The honda funk in here is stiffling. BOO HONDA!!! J/k I've always wanted to test myself in some kind of endurance race, but I got rid of my enduro when I broke my leg. Haven't gone back but I would love to, pretty awesome places here in SoCal to ride too...hmmmm...
