86 turbo lifters
My 86 turbo 4x4 wagon has the tick of death. It looks like it is coming from a stuck lifter. I pulled off the right valve cover and pushed on each lifter while rotating the cam. Thee of the lifters would go down a little, but one would not budge. I can't find any info on how to replace these hydrolic lifters. Can anyone tell me where I can find info on how to do this? My Chilton's manual does not cover this. Is there another web site that specializes in these old Subarus?
Thanks. |

Re: 86 turbo lifters
Yes, you are right: Chilton is trash!
I have seen a page in Haynes about HLAs. I believe you just pull them out and pump them while submeged in oil. Another sourse of ticking is a bad oil pump gasket. There is a lot of information on the topic at www.ultimatesubaru.org Click on "Older generation of Subarus" Good luck, Sam

Re: 86 turbo lifters
I used "Rislone" on a chev 305 with a stuck lifter. It did clean it out enough to stop the ticking. It's a cheap try....
