'00 COUGAR removing dash

basically all I need to know is how to remove the top piece of the dash (the curved piece above the cluster that includes the two air vents above the climate controls). I believe in order to do this I must first remove the piece to the left of the steering column that has the switches for the headlights and for the dome light (does this just pull off??). Then Must remove the cover from the climate controls which is the same piece that covers the radio. Just wondering if this piece also just pops off or if there are screws somewhere? Also noticed when I tried gently pulling at this piece that the switches seemed to want to come off with it; is that right? Couldn't tell if the button for rear defrost and the one with the security light were supposed to come off as well. This is not my car and I just didn't want to mess anything up. Is there anything security or air bag related that I should worry about in this small project? I know that the top dash piece comes out with 4 or 5 screws. thanks
