2009 ACME NNL Southern Nationals photos & results
Photos Here
ACME had what looked like a record attendance and a near-record turnout of 647 models entered into the show! Thanks to everyone who made this another outstanding show; from club members to our guests, many who travel great distances to enjoy the weekend with us. We had 114 different builders from 18 states in attendance. Gregg from Model Cars Magazine flew in from Hawaii, Jim from Scale Auto was there from Wisconsin. Look for coverage in both magazines. There was also a record turnout of junior modelers and kids in the make 'n take "build a '57 Chevrolet" in the Jonquil room. The kids were all having a blast. Everyone commented on the astoundingly high quality of models throughout the show; our show is blessed to attract the best of the best and it's clear that the word is out that Atlanta is one of the must-attend shows of the year and continues to grow, the crowds around the tables were thick. Ours is a modified NNL, with a few more awards than the most traditional NNL's. This years winners: Ken Mosezar Best In Show: Clay Kemp/Superman Returns #24 Monte Carlo Best Junior: KC Ledford/'69 Nova Augie Hiscano award: Dirk Joseph/Chevrolet Cameo PU Lee Baker memorial award: Kason Wang "Go RV'ing" motorhome Retro in the Metro Theme: Dirk Joseph/Concept Camaro Daytona Speedweeks Theme: Jay Savarese/'99 Goodwrench C5R Internet Theme/Drag Racers: Darryl Raper '58 Plymouth MTI Racing Best Camaro: Dirk Joseph/Concept Camaro MTI Racing Best Corvette: Jay Savarese/'99 Goodwrench C5R Top Ten: Garland Farris III/'66 GTO Top Ten: Ron Royston/Pop's Texaco Diorama Top Ten: Gary McCulloch/'56 Ford Convertible Top Ten: Billy Youngman/Silk Cut Jaguar Top Ten: Chip Rymer/'64 Chevy PU Top Ten: Jerel Wolfe/'37 Ford & Drag Boat Top Ten: Chris Hooker/'69 Nova Top Ten: Mike Alvarez/'07 Pioneer Stallion Mustang Top Ten: Rodney Jefferson/'62 Impala CV L-R Mike Lawrence/GTMike400, Brian Venable/Veyron, Eric Cole/Mach I 2003, Russell Wells/69*Goat, Scott Loudenslager/OutaFocus in yellow shirt in background. ACME Treasurer/Show Chairman Paul Wehner discussing important business w/"The Prez" Henry Trent & Earl Miller MC Wes Hofferber Front desk helpers Paul Grala, Paul Wehner, and Harold Sullins The Make-'n-Take was a big hit this year! The future of the hobby; a record number of junior entrants this year Modeling is serious business, as Brian Venable/Veyron & Chip Wamsley can attest to. Gary McCulloch from Charleston, SC was the happiest guy in the community center; his first trip to the Atlanta NNL and he not only met some of his modeling heroes this weekend like Hank Borger, Bill Coulter & Bob Shelton, he won one of the coveted Top Ten awards for his '56 Ford CV model. Dirk Joseph/ScrappyJ cleaned house, winning "Best Camaro" and "Best Retro in the Metro" with his Jada Camaro concept car, but also winning the "Augie Hiscano" award for his Chevy Cameo truck. No show would be complete without a big win by Clay Kemp/hakkfan, who won Best In Show (the top vote getter of the top ten) this year with his #24 Superman Returns Monte Carlo.

Thanks for the great coverage and post, Bob. I edited the bit about Clay for you. All-in-all, it was an excellent show. Build quality was definitely up this year, but that seems to be the case every year. I look forward to next years show and the coverage in the magazines.

Re: 2009 ACME NNL Southern Nationals photos & results
What an unexpected delight seeing this post when I logged on this morning!
I'm in South Africa and therefor rather isolated from your community, but a number of the (user)names are familiar to me, so it was really nice to see the faces behind the names. Equally importantly, it is great to see such a good turnout and how much everyone is clearly enjoying the event, particularly the kids. At a time when the automotive industry is enduring it's greatest crisis ever, it's clear that that the scale auto world has never been better. Well done to the organizers, and well done to Clay and all the contestants. |

All i can say is WOW. I wish i was closer to atlanta. Ill try to attend the so called biggest show in the east, which i think is the jersey one if im not mistaken.
Bob, thanks for the great pics. I really appreciate sharing them with us. Also the judging must be very difficult at these shows. I think that three in one camaro, challenger, and mustang is the perfect combo. Beautiful model. PS No wonder why theres so many stunning models, you guys are old veterans. |
