Car overheated! Now wont start HELP

My Volvo s40 overheated on the freeway I quickly stopped and smoke was coming out of the engine I had to tow the car home I'm guessing my thermostat was shut closed because the gauge just randomly shot up from cold to red now my car wants to start but cant maybe loss of compression from a blown head gasket ? there are no signs of coolant leaks there is no coolant in my oil cap just oil Could it be just a blown head gasket?
